چکیده

A study has been carried out on the grain size distribution of cylindrical compacts obtained by consolidation of iron powder severely deformed by mechanical milling. Consolidation has been performed in two consecutive steps: cold and hot conditions. The hot one was done at two temperatures, namely 425 and 475oC. After milling, the iron powder has a grain size of 8 nm (± 4 nm) with an average hardness of 800 HV. After hot compaction the grain size increases up to 50 nm, especially at 475oC where a small fraction of grains reach larger values than the average. The grain size was evaluated by two different techniques, X-Ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Results showed some differences between both methods. The advantage of using TEM is that grain size distribution, and not only the average size, can be obtained. Small discs were also obtained from the compacted specimen in order to fracture them on a “ball on three balls” equipment. The fracture behaviour of the samples was then studied by SEM.

Production and Characterization of Nano Crystalline Fe85Si10Ni5 Soft Magnetic Alloys by Mechanical Alloying

Abstract There are various methods to produce iron based nano crystalline magnetic alloys. Among these methods, mechanical alloying is one of the most important. In this research, nano crystalline Fe85Si10Ni5 soft magnetic alloy was synthesized by mechanical alloying. The effect of alloying time on phase constituents and magnetic properties of the produced powders was investigated, by X-ray di...

Effect of Mechanical Milling on the Morphologyand Structural Evaluation of Al-Al2O3 Nanocomposite Powders

The morphological and microstructural changes during mechanical milling of Al powder mixed with 2.5, 5 and 10 wt.% Al2O3 particles were studied. The milling was performed in a planetary ball mill for various times up to 20 h. The produced composite powders were investigated using X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) to elucidate the role of particle size, secondary phase content and milling time on ...

Nanocrystalline Al7075 + 1 wt % Zr Alloy Prepared Using Mechanical Milling and Spark Plasma Sintering

The microstructure, phase composition, and microhardness of both gas-atomized and mechanically milled powders of the Al7075 + 1 wt % Zr alloy were investigated. The gas-atomized powder exhibited a cellular microstructure (grain size of a few µm) with layers of intermetallic phases along the cell boundaries. Mechanical milling (400 revolutions per minute (RPM)/8 h) resulted in a grain size reduc...

INFLUENCE OF Si-POWDER CHARACTERISTICS ON THE PORE STRUCTURE OF Si-POWDER COMPACTS AND OF REACTION-BONDED Si3N4

In order to achieve a homogeneous starting material for the production of dense Si3N4 by post-sintering of RBSN, the morphological and chemical characteristics of the Si-starting powders as well as the pore structure of the Si-powder compacts have to be optimized. In this context, the influence of the grain size distribution on the micropore size distribution of the Sipowder compacts was determ...

Sintering and Characterizations of WC-20wt.% (Fe,Co) Nano-Structured Powders Developed by Ball-Milling

The aim of the present work is to study the effects of the nanostructured WC-20 wt. % (Fe,Co) with different ratios of iron to cobalt on the microstructure and hardness of sintered samples. Furthermore, a sample with a cobalt binder under the same condition was produced for the comparison purposes. The nanocomposite development, after different milling times, has been monitored by means of X-ra...
